Aditya Birla wanted to probe into the financial behavior of migrant and low income workers in India. They wanted to study this potential market for Micropayments over the Smartphone. Was this market ready for the next generation payments bank? Our team at IBM IX went into the workers’ lives a had a glimpse of their financial understanding, behavior and habits. Some very interesting findings came from this study. Following are some insights from the research. How can you propose a digital payments bank to users who still use feature phones? This project was received with high acclaim by everybody at Aditya Birla and a very lively discussion took place at the Design Thinking Workshop where our team presented insights. This project was followed by the demonetization by the Indian Government which was an experimental project undertaken to make wallets and payment apps successful for Micropayments.
